Freesat Explained

What is Freesat?

Freesat is an alternative to Freeview that uses a satellite dish instead of a traditional TV aerial. Unlike other popular satellite TV services, Freesat requires no subscription, so once the dish and receiver are set up, there are no more fees to pay.

How is Freesat different to Freeview?

The main difference is coverage – figures state that Freesat covers 98% of the UK, which would be perfect for those in areas that have no or poor Freeview signal.

Freesat also boasts more TV and Radio channels than Freeview, which can be viewed here:

http://www.freesat.co.uk/files/3412/9778/2074/Large_Print_Channel_Guide_15_02_11.pdf

(Requires Adobe Reader)

Is Freesat in HD?

Freesat currently has 3 HD channels, and unlike Freeview, which currently only allows certain areas to receive HD channels, Freesat’s are viewable by all. There are plans to add more HD channels in the near future.

Is Freesat the same as Sky?

No, Freesat is independent to services such as Sky, BT Vision and Virgin Media. If you are an existing Sky customer however, you can use the existing dish on your home combined with a new set-top box to receive Freesat. In most cases it won’t even need re-aligning.

What equipment do I need to watch Freesat?

As mentioned before you will need a dish, which can be installed for around £80 - £100. You will also need a Freesat receiver, which typically start at around £50. Why not see what we have in stock here at GoGoDigital?

http://www.gogodigital.co.uk/freesat/freesat-receivers.html

Can I record programmes and pause live TV like Sky+?

You can, provided you buy a Freesat+ unit. This will allow you to one-touch record, schedule single recordings and series recordings, and pause and rewind live TV. We also stock Freesat recorders here at GoGoDigital:

http://www.gogodigital.co.uk/freesat/freesat-recorders.html

What about on-demand services?

Most Freesat HD receiver boxes support BBC iPlayer and ITV Player (coming soon) when connected with your home network. This service reportedly only needs a connection speed of 1mb, with 2mb minimum for high-quality viewing.

Am I the sort of person who would benefit from Freesat?

If you have a poor Freeview signal in your area, or want to experience HD channels in an area with no current Freeview HD signal, then Freesat would be very beneficial to you, especially if you do not want to pay a monthly fee for the privilege.

HD Explained

It seems like there is no escape from the popularity of HD television - its introduction into British homes has seemingly been very rapid. Because of this, we often speak to people who recognize that HD exists but aren’t entirely clear on the basic facts – so here is a guide for all those interested!

What is HD?

HD (or high definition) does not just suggest that a device simply gives a good picture quality – it refers specifically to the resolution it uses.

Your television picture is made up of many rows and columns of tiny dots called pixels. These pixels light up independently to create the picture you see on your screen.

What HD allows for is more pixels to be contained within a TV screen, producing a sharper image than normal.

To show you just how this looks in relation to these pixels, we put a 32” standard definition TV next to a 32” HD TV and displayed the same image on each. We then used an expensive camera to photograph a small, equally sized area on each screen.

As you can see, having more pixels on the same size screen makes this simple line look less like a collection of squares and more like the black line it should be – making the overall picture on your TV screen much more sharp and detailed.

Standard definition televisions in this country produce a picture 576 pixels tall. HD boosts this number, producing a picture up to 1080 pixels tall.

So in the most basic terms, more pixels on the screen equals better defined images. The modern technology inside most HD televisions also makes the contrast and colours a lot more vibrant to further enhance your viewing.

What is HDMI?

HDMI is the name given to the cables and sockets that almost all HD devices use. Think of these as the new SCART – they carry the sound and picture all in one lead, which can be used to link your television to your DVD, Blu-ray player or Sky HD box.

Will an HDTV make my existing standard definition devices look better?

No – in fact, they would look worse than they would on a standard-def TV. This is because it has to stretch the picture to be displayed on more pixels, resulting in a blurry mess.

If you wish to watch standard-def sources such as DVDs, you will need to invest in a DVD player that features “upscaling”.

What is “Upscaling”?

Upscaling takes a standard-def picture, enlarges it for a HD screen, and then uses various methods to digitally enhance a picture – not dissimilar to how people can use computers to digitally enhance old photographs.

Upscaling DVD players also allow you to connect to your TV via HDMI cable for optimal sound and picture quality.

Fortunately, upscaling DVD players are relatively cheap and easily available; however you will be hard pressed to find an upscaling VCR, for instance.

The best way to watch films in HD is with a Blu-ray Player. Much like a DVD player, these units use identically sized discs which have been designed specifically for HD screens.

Blu-ray players have built-in upscaling for DVDs too, so there is no need for two separate units.

Even though the technology is still relatively new, you can find many great Blu-ray players to suit your budget, even here at GoGoDigital!

http://www.gogodigital.co.uk/blu-ray-players.html

Can I watch TV in HD without Sky?

As the digital switchover takes place, airwaves are being freed up which means that HD TV channels are being introduced. You may have already seen advertisements for BBC HD, which can be viewed with a Freeview HD set-top box, so long as you can receive the right signal in your area.

For those who are still waiting for Freeview HD to be broadcast in your area, you can also have a service called Freesat installed in your home, which uses a satellite dish like Sky - although requires no subscription.

For Freeview HD and Freesat set-top boxes and recorders, why not choose GoGoDigital?

http://www.gogodigital.co.uk/freeview/freeview-hd.html

http://www.gogodigital.co.uk/freesat.html

For those living in an area without Freeview HD and no desire to have a dish installed, do not be put off from buying a HD TV as even though normal digital TV is broadcast in standard def, almost all HD TVs have TV channel upscaling as standard.

What is the difference between HD Ready and Full HD?

“HD Ready” and “Full HD” are terms you may have heard being spoken or stickered on new TVs.

HD Ready means that it can display HD devices such as Blu-ray players or Freeview HD receivers with an HDMI cable, however the picture will be somewhere in between standard def and the best HD picture available. It typically uses a screen of 720 pixels tall.

Full HD is self explanatory – it is the best HD picture available and recommended for those wanting the most out of their home entertainment. It uses a screen of 1080 pixels tall – nearly double the resolution of standard-def TV.

So there we have it! We hope we have cleared these facts up for you, and check the GoGoDigital website regularly for more HD enabled products!

Samsung BD-C5300 Blu-ray Player

Another great example of Samsung quality, slim, compact, stylish
but most importantly highly functional – all for a great price.

The first thing that caught our attention about the Samsung BD-C5300 was the speed it took to power up and open the tray – a fraction of the time compared to the previous Blu-ray units we have tried out.

As some of you may have experienced, a lot of Blu-ray players in this price range can be rather sluggish, leaving you waiting almost painful amounts of time before the disc menu loads. This is due to the sheer amount of data contained on a Blu-ray disc, much more to be read than a normal DVD, for instance.

No painful waits for us however, as the main menu greeted us after a short splash screen. We were pleased by the Samsung BD-C5300’s simple interface, and found the wood finish background rather amusing in contrast with the sleek, futuristic look of the actual unit itself.

The settings menu was also well laid out, containing lots of useful features, many of which had an “auto” setting for novice users.

Furthermore, the Samsung BD-C5300’s remote is simple to understand, using large buttons with easy to read text, and glow in the dark player controls - for those who like to watch their films in the dark.

All of the Blu-ray films we tried out on the Samsung BD-C5300 looked fantastic running in 1080p (Full HD) over a HDMI cable, and all of the normal DVDs we tried upscaled beautifully.

Another neat feature we found whilst watching is that the Samsung BD-C5300 will not only display how much time has elapsed whilst watching a film, but also how much time is remaining – a small but useful and often overlooked idea by other companies.

After we had finished playing iconic movie scenes in glorious high definition, we then took a look at the other features the Samsung BD-C5300 boasts.

Inserting a LAN cable into the back does more than allow player updates, as the Samsung BD-C5300 includes Samsung’s internet@tv service – allowing you to stream content from the web, viewable on your TV.

After the brief initial setup, we found that the UK service seems to be skimping a little in comparison to our friends across the pond, but still housed some brilliant features, ranging from quite fun and novel to very useful.

Samsung say the BBC iPlayer and LoveFilm apps will be coming shortly, and for now we are treated to Youtube, Vimeo, Google Maps, Facebook, Twitter and many others.

The Youtube app was the most surprising – it was a lot more versatile compared to other company’s versions that we have tried. We were able search using the remote similar to texting on a mobile phone, retrieve info from our online Youtube accounts and create playlists – great for watching multi-part shows seamlessly.

Connecting the Samsung BD-C5300 to the internet also allows you to access BD-Live content from Blu-ray discs – meaning you can download additional content from a film extras menu – perfect for enthusiasts.

You don’t need to place your unit near your router either, as the Samsung BD-C5300 can be coupled with Samsung’s Wi-fi adapter for wireless convenience.

In addition to hooking the Samsung BD-C5300 up to the internet, you can also set it to join your home network, allowing you to display photos and video files on your TV (a feature known as DLNA), as well as play any music you may have.

The Samsung BD-C5300 also allows you to do this via USB. Why view your latest holiday snaps on the screen of your digital camera when you can plug your camera in to your Samsung BD-C5300 and view them on your TV?

It is compatible with quite a hearty amount of formats too, including MP3, WMA, JPEG, DivX, MKV and MP4.

Owning a Samsung HDTV will come as a bonus if it is Anynet+ enabled, as you can control the majority of the Samsung BD-C5300’s features using your standard TV remote, through the TV’s sensor, which is perfect if your Blu-ray unit is tucked away somewhere hard for the usual remote to reach.

We have plenty of units in stock boxed and ready, with our usual Core Value 12 month warranty, and for a short time only at the special price of £76.99 they are sure to sell quickly!

So why delay? Buy your Samsung BD-C5300 right now from GoGoDigital:

http://www.gogodigital.co.uk/blu-ray-players/samsung-bd-c5300-blu-ray-player-wi-fi-ready.html

A New 4ft by 4ft Score Board sponsored heavily by GogoDigital saw Fordingbridge close out the 2009/2010 season 4th place 1 point behind local rivals Ringwood and Ellingham in their first season in the London and Southwest Division 3 league.

GogoDigital also sponsored local Rugby Player James Greenwood in a Fund Raising game in June which saw the club raise over £6000 for the Tony O’Connel Founders Fund, a fund created in the name of the clubs late president Tony O’Connell. The nature of the fund is to again raise money to be used in the improvement of facilities for future generations. The proceeds raised have already seen the start of their new Rugby pitch which will be used for all age groups.

GogoDigital wish them all the best in the upcoming 2011 season and look forward to seeing the clubs progress!

Why do I need to re-tune?

Freeview TVs and boxes will need to be re-tuned on or after Wednesday 30 September, and also from time to time, to pick up available channels.

On Wednesday 30 September improvements are being made to the Freeview service to pave the way for the digital TV switchover. You will need to re-tune your Freeview TV or box (including BT Vision and Top Up TV) from lunchtime onwards to ensure you continue to receive your available channels, including Channel Five.

The re-tune will allow Channel Five to become as widely available on Freeview as the other terrestrial channels at digital television switchover. Technical preparations for future improvements to the Freeview service (such as Freeview HD) are being made. Freeview will confirm further details about the new service soon.

Regular re-tuning

Satellite, cable and analogue TV services will not be affected.

Basic re-tuning normally only takes a few minutes:

What is a PVR?

Unfortunately the creators of the PVR created a fantastic product but gave retailers a massive headache when they thought of the extraneous product name: PVR!

If you search online you may find - "PVR (Priya Village Roadshow) Cinemas is one of the largest cinema chain in India" - rest assured this is not what we are selling you!

A PVR 'Personal Video Recorder' (also know as a DTR or DVR) is basically a Freeview box with a built in Hard Drive - allowing you to record Freeview (digital tv) onto the hard drive for future viewing.

PVRs vary by the amount of tuners, size of Hard Drive and whether it has a ESPN (Top UP TV) card slot.

Tuners: A single tuner PVR will allow you to watch a freeview channel and at the same time pause, rewind and record the single channel.

A twin tuner does exactly the same but the second tuner allows you to change the channel and watch, record, pause or rewind the second channel whilst the first one is still recording.

Hard Drive: Hard Drive size varys by model and the PVR naming convention usually incorporates the Hard Drive (HDD) size in its title. ie. PVR160 has a 160GB Hard Drive. The higher the HDD size - the higher amount of recordings you can store.

ESPN: Some PVRs have a built in Top UP TV card slot - so alongside the standard Freeview viewing you can pay a subscription for such things as Setanta Sports.

Summary

A PVR is a Freeview recorder which allows you to Watch, Record, Rewind and Pause LIVE TV.
